BUILDING SCIENCE 2

Students are provided an understanding of building acoustics in relation to building design and construction. They are introduced to the field through acoustic history, practical measurements, sound insulation, reverberation, and noise, internal and external to the building. Students are also given the opportunity to use lux meter and sound pressure level meters to experience illuminance and sound level. Students are exposed to day lighting strategies, permanent and supplementary artificial lighting of interior, various types of artificial light sources,) and simple calculation to determine uniform lighting for interiors. This module is also integrated to architecture design Studio 5 (ARC 60306) to enable students to demonstrate their knowledge and understanding through application

Learning Outcomes

1.Recognize the relevance of design implications on the acoustic and lighting environments.

2. Explain the terminologies used in architectural acoustics and lighting.

3. Describe design of spaces free from glare, lit with proper selection of light sources, including day lighting strategies that can be applied to create more sustainable designs.

4. Exemplify suitable light sources to create intended or desired ambiance.

5. Calculate the required amounts of external opening required to provide adequate internal illumination levels for simple designs and apply knowledge to creatively introduce daylight into interior spaces without bringing in heat.

6. Design simple acoustically-compatible spaces that enhance sound qualities in spaces while exploring noise reduction method to achieve required reverberation time.

PROJECT 1 - AUDITORIUM CASE STUDY

An auditorium is a special room built to enable an audience to hear and watch performances at venues such as theatres and music halls. For movie theatres, the number of auditoriums is expressed as the number of screens. Auditorium can be found in entertainment venues, community halls, and theatres, and may be used for rehearsal, presentation, performing arts productions. Apart from entertainment, an auditorium also used for a space for speech delivery such as lecture theatres. A successful design of auditoriums muchly depend on its acoustic design which include the auditorium layout plus absorption materials used. It is essential to preserve and enhance the desired sound and to eliminate noise and undesired sound.

PROJECT 2 - LIGHTING INTEGRATION

This project aims to integrate students' understanding of the principles of lighting design in the context their final design project of studio 04 / 05. It will encompasses on artificial and daylighting systems also will implement the PSALI design strategies.
